Reinforcing the ends of a seam means locking the thread so the seam won’t unravel. Backstitch does this best because it stitches backward and then forward along the seam, creating a dense line that locks the starting and ending threads in place. This extra locking is exactly what helps the seam hold up to stress and washings. A running stitch is looser and doesn’t secure the ends, so it can pull out. Cross-stitch is decorative and not used to reinforce seams, while a hem stitch is intended for finishing hems, not securing seam ends. In machine sewing, you can use the reverse stitch function to achieve the same locking effect at the start and end of the seam.
